Eelgrass Seedpod

Eelgrass Seedpod

Prisoner's, Santa Cruz, California Channel Islands

When mature, eelgrass seedpods are released by their parent shoot. They then float to the surface and drift away. Seeds are released one-by-one in depth-charge fashion (the pods float, the seeds do not). Despite the elegance of this reproduction strategy, eelgrass may actually spread via plants that storms have ripped from their parent beds.
