Hungry Man Gulch is the furthest-east anchorage on Santa Cruz, and one of the most sheltered when winds and waves are from the west, as they were last weekend. It can be a good place to spend the night, under those conditions. The bottom is rocky, with some invertebrate life. Visibility usually isn't outstanding. For whatever reason, blackeye gobies and infant vermillion rockfish have been amazingly populous here, the times I've dived it. The blackeye gobies rise up off the bottom and swim into the current, by the dozens. Closer in to shore, kelp grows and the fish are more diverse.
